Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Car sales in March 2022 broke records compared to the last few months, especially during the pandemic. Retail and wholesale sales soared, driven by consumer interest in taking advantage of the end of the PPnBM discount period and the Eid momentum.
Wholesales data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) in March 2022, wholesales sales reached 98,536 units, up 21% compared to the previous month and up 16% compared to March 2021. Meanwhile retail sales in March 2022 reached 89,821 units. Record sales in March are also the highest throughout 2022.
This sale is a record high in the previous few months. In September 2021, on a wholesale basis, national car sales in September 2021 broke the sales record in one month with 84,113 units, then broke again 96,673 units in December 2021 due to concerns that PPnBM would not be extended anymore.
Toyota is still the best-selling car brand and is at the top with wholesale sales of 33,344 units and retail of 30,935 units. In second place is still filled by Daihatsu with the achievement of wholesale sales of 17,465 units and retail of 16,318 units.
Chairman of the Manufacturing Industry Division of the Indonesian Employers’ Association (Apindo) Johnny Darmawan said that the two policies would affect the sales of new cars which shot up sharply. The plans have been seen since last month.
“Why did sales in March increase significantly to 89,811 units, because that was the last month people received PPnBM incentives, otherwise prices will rise in April,” he said in Profit. CNBC Indonesia quoted Monday (18/4).
