For its fiftieth edition, the Mondial de Montaigu had a thrilling last weekend with three fine winners.
The Montaigu tournament ended on Easter Monday with the classification matches and the two Nations and Clubs men’s finals. Already qualified on penalties against Romania in the semi-finals (0-0, 8-7 on pens), England this time dominated Japan (0-0, 3-2 on pens) who had eliminated the team of France in the semi-finals (1-0). Only downside, the chambering of the young English when their goalkeeper stopped the shots of the Japanese players. A lack of humility, especially as Japan had created the best chances during the game. France finished third after a success against Romania (2-0).
In the Clubs tournament, Anderlecht had a great success by dominating Olympique Lyonnais (1-1, 5-4 on pens) while the people of Brussels had been beaten in pool by these same Lyonnais (1-3). They then beat Stade Rennais in the semi-final (3-2) while OL qualified against Girondins de Bordeaux (2-2, 5-3 pens). Note that FC Nantes finished last in this Club challenge.
In the women ’s Nations tournament, the United States beat the French team after a high quality final (1-0). Japan ranks third after dominating Portugal (1-1, 2-1 pens). This fiftieth edition of the Mondial de Montaigu was a real success for six days.
