Reasons Why Diabetic Patients Are at Risk for Cataracts

Suara.com – sufferer diabetes mellitus is at risk of experiencing various complications if the disease is not controlled. One of the complications is eye problems that cause cataract.

Ophthalmologists dr. Andrew M Knoch explained, the eye lens consists of cells or fibers which are also living tissue. Living tissue requires nutrients or food as well as oxygen which is obtained from the blood.

“The blood will have the main source of producing energy, so that the tissue can survive, is from sugar or glucose,” explained doctor Andrew in a live broadcast of Health Radio, Monday (21/6/2021).

In people with diabetes, the regulation of glucose released in the blood vessels is impaired.

So that there is some accumulation of metabolic products or glucose breakdown and results in the cells or fibers of the initially clear lens becoming cloudy.

“Because there is a buildup of metabolic products that are not good, it becomes disrupted. So the function to maintain clarity is lost. So the fibers in the lens that were previously clear gradually become cloudy. Later it can cause symptoms,” he said

Having diabetes mellitus is only one of five causes of cataracts. The other four were caused by age, an eye impact, the use of certain drugs, and an eye disease.

In addition to the age factor, Andrew’s doctor said, four causes of cataracts can actually be prevented. This includes diabetes mellitus.

“We can prevent certain causes. One of them is said that diabetes is prevention by regulating sugar levels in normal conditions,” he concluded.
