Reasons for the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Selfie Camera Not 40 MP like the S22 Ultra

KOMPAS.com – The Galaxy S23 Ultra is now Samsung’s most capable smartphone. This flagship phone brings various aspects of photographic enhancements, such as a 200 MP camera, 8K 30 fps recording, and the Astrography feature to capture the stars.

But this time, Samsung chose to include a 12 MP resolution selfie camera, down from the previous 40 MP selfie camera resolution of the Galaxy S22 Ultra and S21 Ultra.

Mobile Experience Product Marketing Manager, Samsung Electronics Indonesia, Verry Octavianus revealed the reason for the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra having a 12 MP front camera, no longer 40 MP like its predecessor.

“Indeed, now the selfie camera for the Galaxy S23 Ultra has a resolution of 12 MP. We consider the 12 MP figure as a fine tune, aka the best number for the best performance” for selfie photos on the Galaxy S23 Ultra,” said Verry.

This is because, in addition to lowering the resolution, the 12 MP selfie camera on the Galaxy S23 Ultra actually brings significant improvements.

Verry revealed that the 12 MP selfie camera is supported by two photo diodes (two photo diodes). That is, the front camera of the Galaxy S23 Ultra now supports 12 million pixels, each pixel configured by two photodiodes. So this camera can absorb more light.

“When processing images with a dual photodiode, simply put, users can take photos and videos in low light conditions, which is much better because the camera can absorb more light,” said Verry.

Verry also revealed that the 12 MP selfie camera on the Galaxy S23 Ultra already supports dual pixel autofocus (Dual Pixel Autofocus/DPAF). The Dual Pixel Autofocus technology is absent on the Galaxy S22 Ultra selfie camera with a resolution of 40 MP.

So, what advantages will users experience with a 12 MP selfie camera with Dual Pixel Autofocus on the Galaxy S23 Ultra?

In theory, Dual Pixel Autofocus technology can make the Galaxy S23 Ultra selfie camera produce much faster focusing and be able to maintain focus on moving objects faster than regular Phase Detection autofocus (PDAF).

In other words, once the selfie camera is opened, the camera will lock focus more quickly on the object that appears on the screen.

In addition to two photodiode technology and Dual Pixel Autofocus, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is also now powered by the strongest chipset from Qualcomm, namely Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy.

This special chipset is claimed to bring a 25 percent increase in GPU (graphics processing) performance and 5 percent for CPU performance, compared to the “ordinary” Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset which this year is widely used in a line of flagship phones from various cellphone vendors.

The increase in CPU and GPU also contributes to image capture and image processing on the 12 MP selfie camera on the Galaxy S23 Ultra.
