Character Spongebob the sponge creature and Patrick the starfish is not just a fiction. These two creatures do exist in nature. The funny thing is, these two creatures were found side by side “hanging out” in the sea.
Marine biologist and invertebrate researcher Christopher Mah posted his findings. This post becomes interesting and funny because Ma calls it a real Spongebob and Patrick in the real world.
Quoted from IFL Science, Monday (2/8/2021) Mah said that she found the sponge and the starfish side by side during a sea expedition around the Retriever Seamount. According to him, they were found at 1,885 meters below sea level. Scientifically, these two creatures are named Hertwigia (bright yellow sponge) and Chondraster (starfish).
His followers are busy commenting on his unique post. One netizen even idly edited it by adding eyes to the sponge and starfish so they really resembled Spongebob and Patrick.
To note, the Retriever Seamount where ‘Spongebob and Patrick’ was found is located in a collection of extinct volcanoes known as the New England Seamounts. This region is found off the coast of Massachusetts and stretches for more than 1,100 kilometers.
This mountain is far from the seabed and forms a rich marine life biota. This area has been mapped extensively by the NOAAS Okeanos Explorer, a Navy ship used for ocean exploration.
