Real-World Driving Range Test of the BMW iX1: Actual Range and Performance

Electric cars usually consume more than the manufacturers state. The result is a less good range than you might expect. This time we test the driving range of the BMW iX1.

The difference in the specified WLTP range and actual range is large for some cars. For this reason, Autovisie tests the real average driving range in practice with air conditioning and radio on. This way you know better how far you really get with an EV.

Test with the BMW iX1

Autovisie went for a double test with the BMW iX1 and the Lexus RZ and did the well-known norm round. The specified range of the BMW is a useful 440 kilometers. But what remains of that in practice?

We drove the BMW iX1 xDrive30, which is currently the only available variant. It is to be expected that the supply will be expanded in both directions in due course. The ’30’ has an electric motor on each axle with 190 hp and 247 Nm, which together can produce a maximum of 313 hp and 494 Nm.

This is the actual range and charging speed of the Smart #1

The usable battery capacity is not particularly large at 64.7 kWh (an Audi Q4 e-tron, for example, has 77 kWh), but we know that electric BMWs are usually quite economical with energy in practice.

The actual range

In this test with the BMW iX1, we achieved less than the specified range, but no extreme results. According to the factory, the WLTP consumption of the BMW iX1 is 16.8 kWh per 100 kilometers. The measured consumption is only 16.4 kWh per 100 kilometers. The factory figures include load losses in the calculation.

Of the 440-kilometer range that the BMW iX1 should have, 394 kilometers were left in practice. The charging time of 28 minutes from 10 to 80 percent was also very accurate and even better than specified. The test was done on a summer day and therefore under perfect conditions for an EV.

WLTP consumption average 16.8 kWh/100 km Measured consumption 16.4 kWh/100 km WLTP range 440 km Measured range 394 km Charging time 10-80% 29 min. Measured Charging time 10 – 80% 28 min. Max. measured charging speed 129 kW

Problems with weight and range put an end to Volkswagen tradition
