Real Madrid humiliated by Villarreal in LaLiga match-up

Real Madrid humiliated by the visiting team, Villarreal. Madrid threw away their lead twice before finally giving up with a final score of 2-3.

Madrid host Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, Sunday (9/4/2023) in the morning WIB. Samuel Chukwueze inspired the victory for the Yellow Submarine after scoring two goals in each half.

The whites benefited from a Pau Torres own goal early in the first half, then Villarreal scored a goal back from Chukwueze. After the restart, Madrid were back in front thanks to a stunning Vinicius Junior goal, but Villarreal then responded with two goals in 10 minutes from substitutes Jose Luis Morales and Chukwueze.

The defeat to Villarreal made it even more difficult for Real Madrid to beat Barcelona in the competition for the LaLiga title. El Real is ranked second in the standings after collecting 59 points, 12 points behind its eternal rival. Meanwhile, Villarreal is in fifth place after collecting 47 points.

Course of the Match

Madrid immediately took the initiative to attack from the start. Vinicius Junior combed the left wing then carried out a stab which ended with a shot from the edge of the penalty box. The ball is still wide.

Madrid opened the scoring in the 16th minute. Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres scored an own goal to give Madrid a 1-0 lead.

Marco Asensio penetrated from the middle before pulling back Vinicius from the byline. Vinicius’ pass returned to Asensio and then continued with a left-footed shot. The ball hit Pau Torres’ body before going into Villarreal’s goal.

Pepe Reina made a double save to block Karim Benzema’s shot and the rebound that Rodrygo was chasing. Villarreal then responded after Samuel Chukwueze went off the mark.

In the 39th minute, Villarreal finally scored a goal back. Giovanni Lo Celso’s short pass in front of the penalty box was received by Samuel Chukwueze. He passed Nacho Fernandez’s guard before finishing with a low kick into the middle of Madrid’s goal. Score 1-1.

Villarreal pressed Madrid ahead of halftime. Juan Foyth beat Aurelien Tchouameni on the edge of the box before firing a shot into the bottom corner. Thibaut Courtois successfully brushed off the ball.

Real Madrid are back in front after the restart. Vinicius Junior scored a goal against Villarreal while changing the position to 2-1 in the 48th minute.

After receiving a pass from Dani Ceballos, Vinicius Junior escaped from being escorted by four Villarreal defenders. Vinicius finished with a low shot.

The decision to include Jose Luis Morales proved telling. Morales scored Villarreal’s second goal and leveled the score at 2-2 in the 70th minute.

Chukwueze outwitted Madrid’s back line before releasing a cross from the right side of the penalty box. The ball was controlled by Morales to be continued with a kick that hit the Madrid player. Morales caught a rebound with a low shot that penetrated Courtois’ goal.

Villarreal turned to beat Madrid 3-2 in the 80th minute. Chukwueze danced on the right side of the box then fired an accurate shot at the far post that Courtois couldn’t reach.

Just moments later, the referee awarded a penalty to Madrid after Eduardo Camavinga went down during a duel with Foyth and the ball hit Aissa Mandi’s arm. The referee checked the incident via VAR and reversed his decision.

A golden opportunity was missed by Rodrygo after receiving an attractive bait from Vinicius Junior from the byline. Rodrygo’s shot from close range was slightly off the mark.
