Ready to build a space station, NASA is ready to disburse Rp. 5.7 trillion in funds

GREGET.co.id – NASA offers a grant to private companies interested in developing and building a space station. The United States National Space Agency has committed to spending up to USD 400 million (around Rp.5.7 trillion).

Bids have been made so far to four private companies. Funding is available through the Commercial LEO Destinations (CLD) project initiative.

Privatization of space travel and launching of satellites into orbit benefits NASA and the United States in general. NASA hopes to replicate the success of the Commercial Cargo and Commercial Crew program with the CLD project. NASA estimates that the Commercial Cargo and Commercial Crew program will save between USD 20 billion and USD 30 billion over the next decade.

According to Slash Gear, this funding will be distributed under the CLD project in Q4 2021 to selected private companies wishing to start developing their space station.

Phil McAllister, Director of NASA’s Low Earth Orbit, looks at three main activities in low Earth orbit: cargo transportation, crew transportation, and destinations. Private companies already handle the transport of cargo and crew, and NASA now wants them to handle the destinations.

“If NASA is in full control of these three activities, human aspirations in low Earth orbit will always be constrained by NASA’s budget,” he explained.

As a result, NASA reasoned that engaging a private company would increase the likelihood of putting more people into low Earth orbit.

In addition, the main reason for the CLD program is to save NASA money by being a private space station user rather than owner and operator. It should be noted that NASA spends around USD 4 billion per year operating the ISS.

The construction and construction of the ISS alone will cost around USD 150 billion. NASA bears most of the costs, with contributions from Russia, Europe, Japan and Canada. NASA is also promoting its CLD program as the ISS ages after being in orbit since the 1990s.

“Even though the ISS is an amazing system, it won’t last forever. Sometimes, the space station may experience irreversible anomalies, “‘I concluded,’ he said.
