Moscow, 19 September – Russia says it is ready for a prisoner exchange with the United States. “We have repeatedly stated that we are ready to negotiate,” a State Department spokesman said Monday. However, the US Embassy in Moscow is not fulfilling its official duties to continue the dialogue.
A possible prisoner swap between Russia and the United States gained momentum after a Russian court sentenced US basketball player Brittney Griner to nine years in prison for drug trafficking in early August. Russia and the US have repeatedly indicated that Griner and former soldier Paul Whelan could be mistaken for US jailed arms dealer Viktor Bout.
US President Joe Biden met Whelan and Griner’s families at the White House on Friday. The government will use all available means to bring Griner and Whelan home safely, spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said.
