Readers’ Forum: Fewer parking spaces, fewer customers

The editorial team received the following letter to the report “Fewer cars, more tables and chairs” from June 10th.

Just keep banishing all vehicles from the city center! I myself live in the country and I hardly ever drive to Wrzburg because I really have difficulty finding a parking space. I can understand the idea with regard to the restaurateurs, because they have to guarantee the rules of distance and because of the cornering of the tables and chairs they need more space to cushion the financial losses. But if more and more parking spaces are no longer available, customers are banished from the city center.

Outdoor catering is only interesting in the summer months, in winter these areas are empty and cars are no longer allowed to park. How would it be if you could design these areas flexibly? So that in the summer months outdoor catering can use the space for tables and chairs and that the cars are allowed to park in autumn, winter and the spring months? Those in charge should just consider that customers and guests are being driven away by the ever fewer parking spaces …
