Reader column: Our living environment according to 5G

Oscar van Schijndel

Today,

Given, Thought, Feeling, Behavior, Consequence. You could call this series of interrelated phenomena a 5G network. You know, that network that makes everything even faster and even better. Well, almost everything. Only even faster to an even better planet, that is not going to work out that way.

Because let’s face it: leave that city behind and look around you. Where horses used to graze, horsepower drivers now rage. Where there used to be green sod, there are now gray boxes. And where the rustling of leaves used to indicate wind, now the noise of branches and the creak of trunks wins.

Our planet is getting into trouble with our way of life. Fortunately, more and more people are becoming aware of the consequences. And we do something about that. We are upgrading our air conditioners so that they can also handle 50 degrees. We offset the emissions from our air travel, so that the World Wildlife Fund can plant a lot of trees. We install heat pumps that run on green energy. Millions, if not billions, are spent to limit the consequences of our lifestyle as much as possible. While it can also be done differently.

The beast called man

Because instead of limiting the consequences, we could also change our behavior. Less flying, the heater a degree lower, more often on the bike. But yes, that all sounds so pedantic. You don’t do much about feelings, that’s just how the creature called human is. Learn to think differently? Yes, that costs nothing, but we get so tired of that. No Ossie, if you want to solve a problem, you have to tackle it at the source!

And so we tackled our planet’s problem at its source. We’re just adjusting the facts. Actually, all those wildfires in our country are not that bad at all. Look at Australia, half the country was on fire there at the beginning of 2020 and people survived that too. Yes, that flood last year in South Limburg was bad, but come on, it’s not Bangladesh here, is it? And didn’t we learn from it? We will no longer be building houses in river valleys from now on, will we? And melting glacier ice in the Alps, isn’t that the case every April? Isn’t that something from the last few years?

Look, then the thoughts are already a lot less worrying and we feel a lot better about it. Then we can just continue to do what we have always done with confidence and we can therefore continue to spend millions and billions to limit the consequences of our way of life. Although I do wonder if the latter will still be with peace of mind…
