In the San Sebastián Asylum they keep the pandemic away from their old people, but nine months of confinement weigh on the spirit of the grandparents and in the capture of resources that have stopped arriving as before, so they have reactivated the 50 by 50 program .

“Everyone is still in good health, both our old men and the asylum workers, it has been heavy, especially in spirit. What ails us the most now is maintaining the operation of the institution that currently has 40 older adults, not all with families and some with relatives who have lost their jobs ”, reported Elizabeth Ugalde, head of the San Sebastián Asylum.

The 50 x 50 program worked in May, but at the end of the year it is necessary to reactivate again.

15 percent drop in the construction sector this 2020: CMIC

“We have to pay for electricity, water, gas, property, expenses that continue, so we started 50 x 50 again, a system that seeks that fifty people can donate 50 pesos and is replicated with promoters who create new networks of support, although they can also donate cleaning products or diapers, it all adds up ”, Elizabeth Ugalde explained.

Of the 40 grandparents of the nursing home, 35 use diapers, and each old man uses an average of four a day, so the consumption and requirement of this product is abundant.

“There are people who donate things that are in poor condition, old clothes, shoes without soles, things that they were going to throw away. Grandparents need things in good shape, something that you would use. Please avoid donating expired medicines, as they cannot be thrown away and it costs to dispose of them ”.

Much of the population lives in their reality due to cases of dementia, but others do know what is happening through the news and are aware of the health measures that have had to be adapted to avoid contagion.

“We continue with the April role, with the three vehicles to bring and return the personnel to their homes to prevent them from using public transport, conducting tests through the UAQ and we are vitaminizing the old men.”

Although they cannot feel the cuddling of family and visitors, grandparents receive love from a distance, so they can send them videos of greetings, encouragement and congratulations as they learn to live in their solitude.

“They live loneliness and that is what has hit them the most, the afternoon coffee, the dance, the visits of those who accompanied them to talk with them or play board games. Sometimes they feel that they no longer love them, they feel lonely ”, shared Elizabeth Ugalde, who recalls that patience is a virtue that applies at the end and at the beginning of life.

Preeclampsia, detection and how to prevent it

“Let him grow old with that patient love that he allowed you to grow with. Let’s take care of our roots; let young people think about what they will look like in their 80s, ”reflected Elizabeth.

You have to remember that the old men are on the platform waiting for the train to leave; on a journey that we will all one day have to make.
