Rayshard Brooks case in Atlanta: ex-police officer arrested after killing

After the death of the African American Rayshard Brooks in the US city of Atlanta, one of the allegedly responsible persons is in custody. As news agencies agree, former police officer Garrett Rolfe surrendered to the authorities after a corresponding agreement.

Another white policeman who was involved in the operation also surrendered to the authorities on Thursday and was later released on bail. Devin Brosnan has been accused of a number of less serious acts, including assault and oath abuse, according to the AP news agency. As the AFP news agency reports, Brosnan is said to have stood on the shoulder of Brooks, who was seriously injured on the ground.

The fatal police shots a few weeks after the death of African American George Floyd in a brutal police operation in Minneapolis had fueled protests against racism and police violence in the United States. A fast-food restaurant was set on fire right next to the crime scene.

Police in Atlanta, Georgia, had been called last Friday because Brooks, who was apparently drunk, had fallen asleep in his car and blocked the entrance to the restaurant. Rolfe and Brosnan did an alcohol test at Brooks and then tried to arrest him. A little later, however, the police and Brooks had a hand-to-hand fight, and later the fatal shots were fired.
