Rare once had a project called Project Dream, a role-playing game that never saw the light of day. Originally started on the Super Nintendo, it was eventually scaled back during the Nintendo 64 era and some of the concepts ended up in other projects. Recently, Rare co-founder Tim Stamper randomly uploaded a photo on social media showing a Nintendo 64 development cartridge running on an N64 with an NTSC Super Nintendo version of the Dream Project next to it. The N64 cartridge was labeled the “latest version of Dream 64” and dated November 21, 1996.

Famous Rareware composer Grant Kirkhope responded to Stamper’s tweet about Dream 64, suggesting it had the intro and “some” gameplay. Although it’s unclear how far development went, some of its concepts were used in other projects such as Banjo-Kazooie.

In recent years, other unreleased Rare projects have surfaced online, like the Nintendo 64 game Dinosaur Planet, which became Star Fox Adventures on the GameCube, and the unreleased version of GoldenEye 007 XBLA for Xbox 360 that received an unofficial release.

As Tim Stamper teases the development of the elusive ‘Dream 64’ cartridge, we can’t help but wonder what the future holds for this unique project. With Stamper’s track record of creating groundbreaking games and his passion for gaming, we have no doubt that this cartridge will live up to its hype. As we eagerly await more information about the ‘Dream 64,’ we can’t help but feel excited about the potential revival of nostalgic gaming experiences. The gaming industry is constantly evolving, but it’s reassuring to know that there are still individuals like Stamper who are committed to preserving the magic of retro gaming for future generations to enjoy. So, let’s raise a glass to Tim Stamper and his team at Rare as we eagerly anticipate the arrival of the ‘Dream 64’ cartridge.
