Rare Astronomical Event: Waning Moon and Defenseless Fish Conjunction in Egypt and Arab World

The waning moon is observed in the skies of Egypt and the Arab world during the hours before sunrise today, Friday, January 5, 2024, in conjunction with the solitary star Samak, in a phenomenon visible with the naked eye on the eastern horizon if the sky is clear.

The Jeddah Astronomical Society revealed in a report that the moon and the defenseless fish will arrive at the moment of conjunction at 03:53 AM Mecca time (12:53 AM GMT), separated by only one degree.

The defenseless fish is one of the first-order stars, which means that it is one of the brightest stars in the sky. In fact, it is two stars revolving around each other, but it appears to us as one star because of the vast distance that separates us from them. If the defenseless fish were at the same distance that separates us from the sun, it would be visually brighter by about 1,900 times that of the Sun. If we place the Sun in the position of the defenseless fish at a distance of 262 light-years, the Sun will appear only 1/1,900 times the luminosity of the defenseless fish at that distance.

In addition, a faint glow can be seen illuminating the unlit part of the moon’s disk, which is the result of the reflection of sunlight from the Earth, a few days before it reaches the conjunction stage of the month of Jumada al-Awwal.
