The phenomenon of rotating fire like a tornado occurred in Mount Bromo. BMKG said the incident was fire whirl which is rare and dangerous.
“The phenomenon that occurs in the Bromo area and is quite viral where a fire whirl is seen during a land fire is called a fire whirl. Fire whirl is a meteorological phenomenon that rarely occurs but is quite dangerous or destructive and it is difficult to predict its occurrence. The appearance of this fire whirl is shaped like “a vortex of fire and smoke and similar to a small tornado,” said Acting Head of the BMKG Public Meteorology Center Andri Ramdhani to reporters, Monday (11/9/2023).
Andri explained that fire whirls occur in fires with several conditions. One of them is in extreme hot conditions.
“Fire whirls are generally preceded by a fire or a large fire which triggers a spontaneous increase in air temperature. The combustion process produces hot air which rises rapidly,” said Andri.
Another condition, namely atmospheric instability. He said the unstable atmosphere allows the process of lifting hot air or large fires to rise.
“Which then causes a decrease in pressure at the surface, so that the surrounding cold air is attracted to fill the empty space that is formed,” he said.
Strong winds, said Andri, also triggered the movement of the fire. Wind speed can be triggered by weather factors or the fire itself.
“This strong wind speed can occur from the fire itself or from surrounding weather factors. Temperature differences will also create an air pressure gradient which will strengthen the rotation,” he said.
Andri said these various conditions caused the land fires in Bromo to rise like a tornado. He considered this to complicate the extinguishing process.
“The combination of these conditions, hot air from the fire source can rise and rotate to form an air column up to a certain height and can spread quickly and widely, making the extinguishing process difficult,” he said.
The land fire in Bromo is thought to have been triggered by sparks from flares used by visitors for pre-wedding photos on Wednesday (6/9). The fire then spread and was difficult to extinguish.
Most recently, a fire vortex like a tornado appeared in the middle of the Bromo land fire. Reported by detikJatim, one of the volunteers named Sismiko said the fire tornado incident occurred on Sunday (10/9). At that time the wind was very strong.
