In the 1960s, Rāmdass (Ram Dass, 1931-2019, real name Richard Alpert), left his teaching job at Harvard University and embarked on a new spiritual path. Rāmdas managed to combine his spiritual quest with social work and help people in different parts of the world. He co-founded the Hanuman and Seva Foundations, worked with environmental organizations, built a socially conscious business community, and helped people near the brink of death.

Already at the beginning of his spiritual search, Rāmdas noticed that in Western society there is a fear of death, which causes constant suffering. Having discovered a different attitude towards death and the immortality of the soul in India, he tried to introduce it to the rest of the world and created the “Departure Project”. Ramdas spent a lot of time with dying people and helped them by sharing his knowledge of other levels of consciousness.
