Later, the 2022 World Cup organizers gave the reasons for giving Lionel Messi the Bisht robe at the 2022 World Cup championship ceremony.
The secretary general of the Supreme Committee for Surrender and Inheritance (SC) Hassan Al Thawadi said that robe is his country’s culture in major events.
“It was an official suit and it was worn for celebrations. It was made to celebrate Messi,” Hassan told BBC Sport via Cnn.
Hassan further said that as organizer of the 2022 World Cup, Qatar saw an opportunity to promote culture in the eyes of the world. This was the reason why his party gave Messi a special robe before lifting the trophy.
“The World Cup has an opportunity to showcase Arab and Muslim culture. This is not about Qatar, this is a regional celebration,” he said.
“People from different backgrounds can come and feel what is here and understand even if they are not face to face. We can celebrate it together,” he added.
