Rail: New direct connections for the region from December – Nuremberg

– For the timetable change on December 12, 2021, Deutsche Bahn is significantly expanding its long-distance service in Bavaria, according to its own information. Some new direct connections are also being introduced in the region.

Less than four hours travel time between Munich, Nuremberg and Cologne: A new ICE Sprinter line from Munich and Nuremberg runs twice a day in the direction of Frankfurt Airport, Cologne and Düsseldorf and back. These trips complement the existing hourly service with up to 30 minutes faster travel time.

The number of sprinters to the federal capital is also being expanded: New evening sprinters leave Munich at around 8 p.m. with a stop in Nuremberg in under four hours to Berlin and back at around the same time.

New ICE trip

Another ICE to Leipzig with intermediate stops in Erlangen and Bamberg will also travel to Augsburg and Donauwörth in the evening. There is a new ICE trip to Berlin early in the morning: from Munich via Augsburg, Donauwörth, Nuremberg and Bamberg without changing trains in the direction of Berlin and on to Hamburg.

With this, the DB closes a previous gap in the ICE hourly service to Berlin for Bamberg. For Munich, Ingolstadt and Nuremberg, the DB is implementing another connection to Würzburg, Fulda and Kassel with a connection to Hamburg.

This will already take place in part from November 22, 2021: An ICE, which has previously operated via Augsburg, will travel in the evening from Munich via Ingolstadt to Nuremberg and on to Kassel / Hamburg. This connection will be around 30 minutes faster for Munich. For travelers from Ingolstadt and Nuremberg, it will also be free of transfer in the future.

Continuous hourly service

On the Munich-Nuremberg – Würzburg axis, there is a continuous half-hourly service until 8:00 p.m. from Munich and a continuous hourly service until 8:00 p.m. in Ingolstadt. The hourly ICE line Hamburg – Hanover – Kassel – Würzburg – Munich will be supplemented by another ICE via Augsburg in the morning to the north and in the afternoon from the north.

The ICE from Hamburg can also stop in Treuchtlingen and Donauwörth and thus creates a direct connection desired by commuters in a favorable time window to Munich.

Day trips from Munich to Zurich will be more attractive in the future: it is around 30 minutes faster from Munich, Buchloe, Memmingen and Lindau with the roughly two-hour ECE trains to the north of Switzerland. This means that travelers between Munich and Zurich now only need three and a half hours – initially for three journeys and probably from April 2022 for all six journeys per day and direction.

Another pair of trains

Another pair of trains connects Lindau directly to Innsbruck, Stuttgart and the Rhine / Main conurbation, for example: A Railjet takes you from Frankfurt and Stuttgart via Lindau to Innsbruck and on to Vienna in the early morning and in the opposite direction from Lindau from Austria in the late afternoon to Stuttgart and Frankfurt.

In future, the latest XXL ICE will run every two hours on the route from Munich and Augsburg via Stuttgart and Frankfurt Airport to the Rhine / Ruhr metropolitan area. The trains each have over 900 seats and eight bicycle parking spaces. The new ICE plant in the Nuremberg area, which has been causing heated discussions for months, is also intended for their maintenance.

In addition, this line will continue to run to Münster, Osnabrück, Bremen and Hamburg without having to change trains – and once overnight. On individual journeys on the Munich – Augsburg – Ulm – Stuttgart – Karlsruhe route, older intercity trains will be successively replaced by more modern ICE trains.
