The President of Sri Lanka Will Resign

Reported CNN, Sunday (10/7/2022), this statement was made by the Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena. Hours earlier, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said he was ready to resign.

Under Sri Lanka’s constitution, if Wickremesinghe and Rajapaksa resign, the speaker of parliament will serve as acting president for a maximum of 30 days. Meanwhile, parliament will elect a new president within 30 days from one of its members who will serve for the remaining two years of the current term.

Sri Lankan PM also ready to resign

Ranil Wickremesinghe is also willing to resign from his post as prime minister of Sri Lanka. Demonstrators are now ‘occupying’ Wickremesinghe’s private house and setting it on fire.

Reported Reuters, Saturday (9/7/2022), Wickremesinghe held talks with a number of political party leaders. This discussion discussed the steps the government will take following the riots.

“Wickremesinghe has told party leaders that he is willing to step down as Prime Minister and make way for an all-party government to take over,” the PM’s office said in a statement. Reuters.
