Rafah Crossing Update: New Batch of Wounded Palestinians and Resumption of Evacuations

The Egyptian Rafah crossing is preparing to receive a new batch of wounded Palestinians, as well as the resumption of the evacuation of dual nationals and Egyptians from the Gaza Strip after the Palestinian Crossings and Borders Authority announced the resumption of work at the crossing on Sunday, following the suspension of movement for two consecutive days, according to what our correspondent reported.

The authorities of the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing had informed their Egyptian counterpart on Friday evening that the crossing of the wounded and foreigners had been suspended due to the Israeli bombing and the besieging of Gaza hospitals by Israeli military vehicles and the targeting of any moving target, which prevented ambulances from moving towards the Rafah crossing.

Sources at the Rafah crossing confirmed that the suspension of the evacuation movement was a step aimed at pressuring the opening of a humanitarian corridor towards the crossing with international guarantees that would ensure the safe arrival of the wounded to the Egyptian side.

Since the beginning of this November until now, about 2,050 people of dual nationality have crossed the Rafah crossing to the Egyptian border as part of a plan to evacuate more than 7,000 foreigners from the Gaza Strip, but the crossing movement was suspended 3 times during the aforementioned period.

The total number of wounded Palestinians who were transferred for treatment to Egyptian hospitals reached 137 during the same period.

The World Health Organization stresses the need for organized medical evacuations to continue safely and without obstacles for seriously ill wounded and sick people to Egypt through the Rafah border crossing.
