Questions regarding Appointment as Governor of the Central Bank of Suriname

Bouterse nominates Sigmund Proeve as CBvS governor

After the Surinamese government announced Sunday that they Sigmund Proeve as acting governor of the Central Bank of Suriname, this was the conversation on social media. One of the issues that emerged is that his appointment as governor would not be legally possible.

In the past, tasting would be a criminal investigation and judgment in the casino scam case of the murdered entrepreneur Vinod Parbhoe. Article 22 of the Banking Law states that the governor must not have had a criminal investigation against him.

Having a judgment is not necessary, an investigation is enough to disqualify the person as a governor. If Proeve is appointed governor, then critics say they are acting contrary to the law. How this issue will be solved is still unknown.

It was also announced on Friday that the Surinamese Bankers Association (SBV) objected collectively to the appointment of Proeve. The bankers would have informed President Bouterse in writing that they had objections to an appointment of Proeve as the next governor at the Central Bank of Suriname.
