Questions about Forum meeting at US Embassy

Various parties in the House of Representatives question a meeting that was held earlier this month at the American embassy in The Hague. There, members of the Forum for Democracy and entrepreneurs were invited to what was described by those present as a fundraising evening for Thierry Baudet’s party. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra also spoke. The Green Amsterdammer writes about the meeting.

VVD, D66, GroenLinks and SP wonder whether this is possible. “Of course this should not have happened”, says Bram van Ojik of GroenLinks. “This is interference in our elections.” SP’er Sadet Karabulut also expresses himself in these terms. Hoekstra believes he should help FvD to fill the party cash. Has Minister Blok already addressed him about this?

According to Sven Koopmans of government party VVD, it is known that Ambassador Hoekstra has a lot of contact with various parties. He has also organized a so-called town hall meeting in Hoofddorp with Koopmans. “A fundraising event at the embassy is something different and not desirable.” Koopmans wants to know whether this was the case.

D66 thinks the meeting may have violated international treaties on the use of embassies. “Text and explanation are needed here,” says MP Sjoerd Sjoerdsma.
