Queen Elizabeth II takes a new step this Sunday: that of the second longest reign in history

On Sunday, she will have been monarch for exactly 70 years and 126 days, equaling King Bhumibol of Thailand, who died in 2016. She would still have to last two years to beat the Sun King, Louis XIV, who reigned over France from 1643 to 1715, spending 72 years and 110 days on the throne. The sovereign could equal this record on May 25, 2024, in 713 days.

Queen Elizabeth II, 96, celebrated her platinum jubilee in early June during four days of festivities. She did not attend any celebrations held for the Royal Family due to her declining health.
