It was the big announcement at this year’s WWDC: Apple is switching from Intel’s computing chip to ARM CPUs that it developed itself. One of the reasons for this could have been the poor quality assurance from Intel.

It should take two years for Apple to convert all of its products to the new Apple Silicon ARM chips. The first Mac with silicon is expected to arrive later this year, but Intel Macs will also be released. The change has many advantages for Apple, after all, the company has long lived the mantra to develop software and hardware under one roof. This also increases the compatibility between the different Apple product lines.
But according to a former Intel engineer
it wasn’t the only reason for the change.
François Piednoël was an engineer at Intel for almost 20 years, today he works in the Research & Development team at Mercedes Benz. And he has a clear opinion of Apple’s decision to turn its back on Intel. In an online stream, he talked about the subject, saying that Apple wasn’t happy with the quality of Intel’s Skylake architecture. Skylake CPUs were installed in various Macs and MacBooks between 2015 and 2016. They can still be found in the iMac Pro today.
According to Piednoël, Apple has always found new flaws in the Skylake architecture. It even went so far that Apple would have discovered more bugs than Intel itself. He described Intel’s quality assurance as “abnormally bad” at the time. At this point, Apple would have definitely decided to switch to its own computing units in the long term.
It cannot be said with certainty whether the Skylake generation really gave the final push in Apple’s decision-making. It was certainly not the only reason for Apple’s new strategy, but it is an interesting aspect. Piednoël is no longer active at Intel, but with his 20 years of experience and reputation, he is still quite credible.
