– Putin has made a big mistake – VG

BRUSSELS (VG) NATO leaders meet for an extraordinary summit one month after the invasion of Ukraine.

Published:

– President Putin has made a big mistake by starting a war against an independent nation. He has underestimated the strength of the Ukrainian people and the courage of the forces, said NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg on Thursday morning ahead of the NATO summit.

Stoltenberg believes the Russians face far more resistance than expected.

Stoltenberg spoke to the press outside the NATO headquarters in Brussels. Here he will later today receive, among others, the American president Joe Biden.

Thursday marks one month since Russia invaded Ukraine.

– The fact is that we are facing the most serious security crisis of a generation, and therefore NATO must respond, Stoltenberg said.

The NATO summit will expected to decide to deploy four new battle groups in the Eastern European member states Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia, said NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

The extraordinary summit will be held on Thursday morning in Brussels.

Will support Stoltenberg extension

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Labor Party) is physically participating in the summit as Prime Minister for the first time.

– The important thing here is to mark that NATO is united. It is to mark that what we have done now is to give all allies security, Støre told VG.

Støre also emphasized that it is important to show that NATO is united and at the same time allows Stoltenberg to remain as NATO chief.

– Norway will support the extension of Stoltenberg as NATO chief if the allies agree on it, said the Prime Minister.

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg himself has opened up that he can stay longer if all NATO countries want it, but has not given further comments.

The case is being updated!
