Russian President Vladimir Putin delivers a speech on Saturday to mark the 75th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany. The head of state also wants to lay flowers at the war memorial near Red Square. The traditional military parade has been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic; instead, fighter jets are to fly over the deserted center of Moscow.
The exit restrictions in the capital Moscow apply until the end of May. In Belarus, on the other hand, a parade commemorates the end of the Second World War. Around 5,000 people are expected to participate in the capital, Minsk. Critics accuse authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko of downplaying the scale of the corona crisis.
Russia and most other former Soviet republics celebrate the 75th anniversary of the victory over Hitler in World War II one day after the other countries. The reason for this is that the new day had already begun in Moscow in 1945.
