Puerto Rican initiative arises after murder of George Floyd | PRESENT

Four young Puerto Ricans pooled their talents to raise their voices against racism after the murder of George Floyd.

The video, produced by Javier Iván Maldonado, emerged from “everything that is happening in the United States and Puerto Rico.” Maldonado explained that he told Vin Ramos about his idea, who is the author of the song heard on the video. “I started calling all the black actors. Thanks to Daddy God we have work in the industry here and we have established ourselves as artists. Thank heaven everyone answered, “Maldonado explained to THE VOCERO.

“When Javier brought me the initiative, I told him, let’s each go to our fort and that’s why I leaned towards music,” Ramos added.

The video was edited by Zaiedd Vélez and Pranjaal Palacios and was completed in just two days.

For Vélez the main goal of creating the video, which has gone viral in a few hours of being on the web, has been fulfilled. “I think it represents a lot for us. We achieved that we wanted to gather our voices, we wanted to carry a message,” he said. While Palacios emphasized that the initiative arises to carry a strong message against racism.

Personalities such as Julio Rivera Saniel, Modesto Lacén, Marisol Calero, Liza Lugo, Jasond Calderón, Heyda Salamán, Aidita Encarnación, Bryan Villarini, Brenda Rivera, Solange Vázquez, among others, participated in the video.

They talk about their experience as black artists

In the case of Javier Iván and Vin Ramos, they have both experienced racism in the art industry.

A few months ago the actors submitted a virtual audition for the Anastasia musical in Mexico. Both received the ‘callback’. However, Vin noted that he was not chosen for the musical because of his skin color.

Likewise, Maldonado narrated THE VOCERO that one of the actresses who participated in the initiative told her that, as an actress, she has been told countless times: “get out of here, I don’t like your hair”.

“We must say enough is enough,” added Maldonado.

“We are influencers and we have the ability to motivate, not simply have followers, that the content is to help, motivate, a good enjoyment of people,” he concluded.
