PSI Chairman Kaesang Parangep: Unlikely Support for Anies Baswedan in 2024 Presidential Election

Jakarta

Chairman of PSI Kaesang Parangep alluding to the presidential candidate of the Coalition for Change, Anies Baswedan, when asked about support for Prabowo Subianto or Ganjar Pranowo. Many people interpreted Kaesang’s statement as a signal of an opportunity to support Anies. Is that right?

Director of Indonesian Political Parameters (PPI) Adi Prayitno believes it is impossible for PSI to support Anies Baswedan in the 2024 presidential election. He said politics is indeed fluid, but according to him PSI will not support Anies.

“Impossible. It’s impossible for the end of the world to happen. If that happens it means that ‘doomsday’ is near. Politics is fluid and not impossible. But there is one thing that is impossible in the world, namely PSI supporting Anies,” said Adi Prayitno when contacted, Monday (9 /10/2023).

Adi then revealed the reason why it was impossible for PSI to support Anies. He said there were very contrasting ideological principles between PSI and Anies Baswedan.

“Ideologically, they are different. Very contrasting. This can be seen from the statement by the PSI elite, which has been very anti-Anies for a long time. That is the principle reason,” he said.

Adi then analyzed Kaesang’s statement which mentioned Anies’ name when asked about his support in 2024. He said Kaesang only wanted to avoid the choice between Ganjar and Prabowo.

“This is an effort to divert political issues. So that Kaesang is not asked questions with black and white answers. Ganjar or Prabowo, the answer is complicated. Because Kaesang is seen as Jokowi’s political compass,” he explained.

“In this context, Kaesang cannot be free of values, cannot stand alone, behind him is Jokowi as his parent. Whatever political choice Kaesang makes, the public will definitely believe it to be Jokowi’s direction,” he continued.

Because of that, Adi saw that Kaesang was only making political pleasantries. He reiterated that it was very unlikely that PSI would support Anies Baswedan.

“It could be that Kaesang is just making political talk because it is very unlikely that PSI will support Anies. It is common knowledge that PSI is very allergic to Anies. Including the issue of the relationship between Jokowi and Anies not being good for a long time. That has become people’s daily consumption. There is no need “There’s something being covered up,” he said.

Kaesang Mentioned Anies’ Name When Asked to Support Prabowo or Ganjar

PSI Chairman Kaesang Pangarep actually mentioned Anies’ name again when asked whether the direction of his political party’s support was for Prabowo or Ganjar. This was expressed by Kaesang, his wife Erina Gundono and members of the PSI advisory board, Giring Ganesha, when they visited the Braga area, Bandung City, Saturday (7/10) evening.

After his tour, Kaesang was asked about the direction of PSI’s support for presidential candidates in the 2024 presidential election. President Joko Widodo’s youngest son (Jokowi) did not reveal which presidential candidate PSI would support.

However, amidst the issue that PSI would support Ganjar Pranowo or Prabowo Subianto, Kaesang mentioned the name Anies Baswedan who is the vice presidential candidate for the Change Coalition.

“Closer to Pak Prabowo or Pak Ganjar?” asked the reporter.

“Weren’t you mentioned Mr. Anies?” Kaesang answered.

Receiving this answer, Kaesang asked journalists to give their choice of three presidential candidates. Kaesang also answered questions regarding the direction of PSI support among the three presidential candidates.

“Then who among the three?” asked the reporter.

“Never mind,” said Kaesang with a smile.
