PS5 with details of backwards compatibility. The company confirms the number of games and hardware limitations

Sony has just provided the necessary details regarding PS5 backward compatibility. As previously reported – the Japanese manufacturer focused only on providing gameplay from PlayStation 4 games. Get to know the details and the list of unsupported titles.

Sony confirmed an important detail: PS5 will run over 4,000 games from PlayStation 4. The company emphasizes that “The overwhelming majority of PlayStation 4 games” we will launch on a new generation. And the players will play “An amazing collection of PS4 productions”.

The Japanese emphasize that selected PS4 games will receive the Game Boost function, thanks to which productions on PS5 will run better (smoother). At the same time, the corporation notes that “Some features available on PS4 may not be available on PS5”and some games may “Show errors or unexpected behavior while playing on PS5”.

Sony warns that before buying add-ons for PS4 games, it is worth starting the production on PlayStation 5 and checking if we are satisfied with the production.

We also got a modest list of games exclusive to PS4 – Sony confirms that there will be a “Playable on: PS4 only” label on PlayStation Store to warn you before purchasing the item. This is how the list looks like:

  • DWVR
  • Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume One
  • TT Isle of Man – Ride on the Edge 2
  • Just Deal With It!
  • Shadow Complex Remastered
  • Robinson: The Journey
  • We Sing
  • Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
  • Shadwen
  • Joe’s Diner

Sony also confirms that PS4 boards will work on PS5 and during the game we will have to insert a physical medium into the next-gen console every time – even if the update is downloaded. We can also save games from PlayStation 4 to the disc from PlayStation Store or simply play them from external memory, and some may use the option of transferring items from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5. On PS5, there will be an option to install selected parts of the items and this option will work on selected titles from PS4 – we will just choose whether we want to know the story or shoot it online.

Sony also clarifies the situation with the controllers:

  • DualSense, DualShock 4 and PlayStation 4 Licensed Pads Will Work on PlayStation 5 with PlayStation 4 Games
  • Licensed PlayStation 4 devices (such as steering wheels, arcade sticks, flight sticks) will work with PlayStation 5 games and supported PS4 games.
  • PS Move Motion Controller and PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work with PlayStation VR games on PlayStation 5
  • Sony encourages the use of DualShock 4 in games from PlayStation 4 on PlayStation 5 – then we will get the “best experience”.
  • “PS5 games are not compatible with the DualShock 4 wireless controller.”
  • PlayStation 5 will allow players to adjust the strength of vibration in games – this option can be found in the PS5 settings.
  • Gold Wireless Headset, Platinum Wireless Headset and third-party headsets connected via USB or audio jack will work on PS5 (the headset application is not compatible with PS5 consoles)

We also learned the limitations of backward compatibility with PS5:

  • The SHARE menu cannot be displayed while playing on PS4 consoles. Screenshots and images can be taken by pressing the create button on the DualSense controller displaying the create menu. Additionally, you can use hotkeys to start / stop video recording or to save screenshots as follows:
    • A single press of the Create (DualSense) or SHARE (DUALSHOCK4) button displays the created menu.
    • Press and hold the Create (DualSense) or SHARE (DUALSHOCK4) button to take a screenshot
    • Press the Create (DualSense) or SHARE (DUALSHOCK4) button twice to manually start and stop recording video.
  • The HD camera is not compatible with PS4 games – connect the PlayStation Camera using an adapter.
  • HDR is automatically enabled for PS5 consoles. To disable HDR, go to Settings> Screen and Video> Video Output> HDR and select SDR.
  • PS4 tournaments feature is not supported on PS5.
  • In-Game Live from PlayStation is not supported on PS5.
  • PS5 consoles do not support the PS4 Second Screen app or the game’s companion app.

There are many indications that some games from PlayStation 4 will require an update on PlayStation 5 (which is understandable and normal), but some functions will not be carried over to the next generation
