It must be clarified that since 1994 in Japan, there was a circle on each subsequent PlayStation console. The situation, of course, is different in the West, where all the most important decisions have long been accepted with X.
Now, however, a new generation is coming and Sony has decided to standardize the function – all players around the world (including Japanese) are to use X to activate. The situation is significant, however, not only because of the habit (although it will be difficult to win), but in Japan, “wheel” means “good or” correct “and the symbol” X “is read as” wrong “. Sony is trying to explain the situation with the name “botanem batsu”, which we can freely translate as “cross button”, but just “batsu” means “no” or “not available”.
No one should be surprised that players in the Land of the Rising Sun are not happy because they have been using the circle as an activation for years – which also makes sense in their culture. Now, however, a new generation will come and everything will be changed.
Kotaku’s editors have gathered a series of negative comments that are now flooded with social media in Japan. Some try to explain Sony’s decision, but many players say directly – they won’t buy a PS5:
