Protest in Kottayam Bank: Businessman’s Suicide and Demands for Strict Action

DYFI leader Jake C. Thomas said that the protest will not end unless the Kottayam SP or Collector reaches the spot and assures that strict action will be taken against the culprits.

Kottayam: Protest in front of Karnataka Bank after a businessman committed suicide after being threatened by the bank manager and employees for defaulting on bank loans. The family and locals are protesting with the dead body of KC Binu. DYFI leader Jake C. Thomas said that the protest will not end unless the Kottayam SP or Collector reaches the spot and assures that strict action will be taken against the culprits.

Police barricaded the protesters. But the DYFI activists pelted stones and bricks at the bank. The bank was already closed in view of the protest. There was a push and shove between the activists and the police. The activists were chased away by the police. Activists are protesting by squatting in front of the bank.

Binu, a native of Aymanam Kudayampadi, committed suicide yesterday. After the post-mortem, he came to the bank with the dead body which was handed over to his relatives. After the protest, the body will be brought home and cremated.

A loan of Rs 5 lakh taken from Karnataka Bank was in arrears for two months. According to Binu’s family, the manager Pradeep and the employees of the bank were constantly threatening him. Binu paid the arrears but this month’s payment was in arrears. According to the family, the bank had promised to pay the amount within the next six months, but the manager kept calling and threatening him and Binu told him that he could not live. There is also a voice recording sent to Binu stating the bank’s threat.

Meanwhile, the bank manager has been called to the police station. Interrogation is going on.
