Proposals from teams not invited to Orlando to avoid a 9-month forced break

The “majority” of the 8 teams that will not resume competition in Orlando – including Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Minnesota and New York – at the end of July, via their front office, presented several ideas to the NBA to avoid passing 9 month without basketball pending the start of the 2020-21 season:

  • A combination of voluntary and compulsory workouts for 2 weeks in July.
  • Regional mini-camps in August including group training for a number of days followed by 3 televised matches.
  • Organized Team Activities (OTAs, like in NFL) for mid-September
  • 2020-21 training camps that could start 10 days before other teams for those who have not played in Orlando.

So many proposals that will in any case have to be validated by the players’ union to see the light of day since they are not included in the CBA. Owners, managers and coaches have expressed their concerns about the consequences on young players of the lack of competition and the estrangement from their franchise over such a long period.
