Thibault De Smet received his training at AA Gent, where he met Thomas Foket. At Ghent he could not fully persevere, but at STVV he grew into a good left back.
Last season De Smet certainly charmed Reims, that with Wout Faes earlier this mercato already made another promising Belgian defender.
“I have known Wout from the national team for a long time and I am now also in the same hotel as him. In addition, I spoke with Thomas about Reims before my switch and he said that it is a great club,” says De Smet on the website of his new club.
“Actually, we would have liked to get Thibault in January,” says general manager Mathieu Lacour. “He was formed in one of the most renowned youth academies in Belgium. His technical baggage is an added value in the left rear position. Due to the presence of Thomas and Wout, he must be able to quickly fit into the group.”
In any case, De Smet can also prepare for European football right away, because Reims finished in fifth place in the Ligue 1 season.
