Projector vs. TV: Why Projectors Are Making a Comeback in the Age of OLED Screens

Those are the days when projectors cost several months’ wages. Today you can also buy ones that cost less than 5,000 CZK. Some even have their own battery, so you can take them out at night and simply play a movie anywhere on a large screen. And the so-called ultra short throw models, in turn, can be placed a short distance from the wall and conjure up a larger picture than the TV.

The choice of projectors has never been as wide as it is today, yet most households still rely on a classic LCD or OLED screen. This also applies in our editorial office, where more than half of the people do not even think about screening. And how is it with you?

I’m thinking about him

… for about fifteen years now. I would love to have movies all over the wall, but I’m always looking for reasons not to buy a projector. It used to be the life of the lamps, now it’s not such a problem. Then I waited for cheaper Full HD, but native 4K came instead. And since they were also at an interesting price, I was excited by the ultra-short projectors, for which I wouldn’t have to remodel the entire living room. So now I’m waiting for a suitable one to be under 25k. And then I’ll find a new excuse anyway. Maybe because of the noise or the fact that I painted the living room last year, I don’t have a white wall and I don’t want a canvas. 🙂

I don’t have it and I don’t want it

I would have no use for him. I very often watch series, but exclusively on a tablet with headphones and the volume at a minimum (in bed before going to bed). Basically, I wouldn’t even need a TV, I only sit in front of it to occasionally play on the Nintendo Switch. The idea of a big screen combined with loud movie sound makes me uncomfortable. I don’t want anything like that at home.

I don’t have it and I don’t want it

Not that I think negatively about projectors, I believe that it can be a good choice for someone, but I have a small apartment. If I were to buy something, I would prefer a classic TV that would be permanently placed. It seems to me that there would be less to worry about with him. Projecting directly onto the wall would not give me a great picture, I would have to solve the canvas, stretch it somewhere, then hide it again. Rather not.

I don’t have it and I don’t want it

I’m not such a cinephile that I need to show movies on a screen at home. At the same time, one needs a large room, which in my case would be covered only by the living room, but I use it differently. I don’t even want to invest in the audio equipment that one would need for that projection to get a great experience. I have a solidly large 4K TV in my bedroom, and I’m happy with it there. In addition, I live within easy driving distance of multiplexes, including IMAX… where it will always be technically better and with tastier popcorn.

yes I have

The projector is such a love&hate thing for me. Thanks to the possibility of the design of our house, I calculated the installation of the projector and adapted everything as much as possible: the gooseneck (too narrow), the preparation of the wiring for the surround speakers (I forgot about Atmos), etc. doesn’t quite understand the Epson TW7000 projector, and I had to replace the original cheap HDMI cable with a better one. Cheap, paid twice, don’t make the same mistake.

However, even after replacing it with a semi-optical cable, the problems continued (image dropouts, playback interruptions…) until I discovered that the cable between the TV and the receiver was incorrectly oriented. Moreover, these blackouts were so unpredictable and annoying that I retreated from watching the projector for a while. After solving the problem, I now turn on the projector for a half-hour series before going to bed, because the experience simply cannot be compared to television.

However, there is still a lot to improve, examine and research: now I am considering a gray reflective coating, because the light output of the projector is unnecessarily high and I need to increase the contrast. Does anyone have experience with this?

I don’t have it and I don’t want it

The projector is certainly a great thing, that is completely without debate, but I consider it more like an ideal thing for a dedicated home cinema. I’m still of the TV Man generation and I don’t have a separate office, so I often listen to, for example, the TV news as a background sound to work at the computer. The second flaw is the canvas. Someone projects a picture directly onto the wall, but I’m an aesthete who has various paintings and prints from more artistic friends on all my walls.

So I’d have to invest in a large canvas and struggle with how the whole thing will look when the canvas is loosely drawn in front of some obstacle. All in all, for me and my small apartment, a 50-55″ thin plate with a soundbar and a subwoofer is a much more suitable solution.

For this kind of home viewing, I have a fairly ordinary LED projector Voto T8e with 720p resolution. Five years ago I installed it in the bedroom and supplemented it with an Nvidia Shield player with a Bluetooth speaker. I used it quite often and didn’t mind the low resolution. It served as a secondary viewing option when, for example, a woman wanted to watch something else on TV. But now I don’t use it anymore, an OLED TV with a surround system gives me a significantly better experience and I have a large 40″ monitor next to my computer when the TV is occupied.

I don’t have it and I don’t want it

I used to think about a projector. But in order to have it, I would also have to have an empty wall. And that’s a luxury that I don’t get 🙂 So we bought a bigger TV that can be surrounded by cupboards with boards, and the problem is over. It’s enough for me for normal viewing, and it actually feels better, if only because of 4K HDR and zero noise during operation.

I have and I adore it. Specifically, the XGIMI Elfin, which recently won a comparison test of portable projectors in Computer magazine. I usually don’t carry it anywhere, but due to the distance between the device and my ear, a low noise level is a priority. A luminance of 800 ANSI is sufficient given the projection distance of 2.5 meters. The system (Android TV) could be faster, but you can live with it.

We have a projector in our bedroom, it goes on almost every night, even if it’s just a 20-minute episode of a bedtime series. I like that I just press a button and I don’t have to go anywhere – I close my eyes and sleep. When we go on vacation, Elfin travels in a suitcase and goes with us.

Yes I have

I test projectors from time to time, but I only have a larger OLED TV at home, due to its more universal use and the lack of space for stable installation of the projector. For occasional use, I have an unsold but very good Full HD BenQ W1050 projector, which even with the factory settings of the cinema mode provides surprisingly well-adjusted colors and correct skin tones. It is not very large and has a built-in basic speaker and high brightness, so it is sometimes used by acquaintances when they need a large picture for example for children’s movies at parties.

I don’t have it and I don’t want it

I had the opportunity to test the Xiaomi Mi 4K Laser Projector 150″ and I have to say that it was a phenomenal experience. A clear picture practically across the entire wall, fairly good sound – this was something that we really enjoyed. However, this set my standard so high that I will no longer be satisfied with an ordinary projector for a few thousand.

In addition, the conditions in our household unfortunately do not allow sufficient darkening of the living room, so although we remember the projector fondly, we are currently planning to purchase a classic television. The projector is currently in the “Someday Possible” stage.

What about you, do you have a projector at home?
