Prohibition of liquor on the beach until the end of September

The riots in Blankenberge last weekend continue to resonate. The governor of West Flanders, Carl Decaluwé, reports that there is a ban on spirits on the beach. That rule will take effect on Friday evening at 6 p.m. and will apply until September 30. Nitrous oxide is also prohibited.

Those who do not comply with the ban risk a fine of 1,600 euros or imprisonment. Licensed businesses, such as beach bars, are still allowed to serve spirits.

The alcohol ban is a result of the massive brawl last Saturday on the beach of Blankenberge, near the Weststraattrap. Dozens of young people were involved in the incident, images show how they turned against the police. The young people would have been under the influence of strong drink.

‘The report of those incidents shows that alcoholic beverages and drugs played a major role. It is not a solution to all problems, but it has to eliminate a factor, ”says Decaluwé.

A few suspects were arrested, the detention of two of them was extended by one month. An 18-year-old man from Saint-Gilles was to be released on conditions, but the public prosecutor’s office is appealing, forcing him to remain in jail for another two weeks.
