Progress of UNESCO-Huawei’s Open Schools for All through Technology project reviewed at international seminar

Following the official launch of the TeOSS project on November 25, 2021, the seminar was co-organized by Huawei and UNESCO as part of the implementation phase of the project. The event included a progress report on the first phase of the project, including results to date, and discussed the implementation of the second phase.

UNESCO is supporting Ministries of Education and other partners in Egypt, Ethiopia and Ghana to implement the three-year TeOSS project, which will run until August 2023. Developed under the UNESCO-Huawei Trust Fund, the project covers the design, pilot testing and expansion of open school systems that rely on technology. These systems will be accessible in schools, at home and in other places, which will ensure the continuity and quality of education, even in the event of a crisis, such as the current pandemic.

“There are three axes to guide the digital revolution, which are all reflected in this project: ensuring connectivity for all; build free and public digital learning content and platforms; and focus on how technology can enhance educational innovation and change,” said Stefania Giannini, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education.

Planned in close collaboration with the governments of Egypt, Ghana and Ethiopia, and aligned with existing national strategies, TeOSS projects have been developed to meet specific local needs.

In Egypt, an ICT competency framework has been developed for teachers and students in schools and colleges/high schools, from kindergarten to secondary school. Digital courseware development experts and primary and secondary teachers will be trained, and a national distance learning center will be established for educators across the country to ensure continued professional development.

The TeOSS project in Ethiopia will focus on setting up an ICT infrastructure to connect pilot schools, train teachers and students, and build a learning management system integrated with a teacher training platform.

“The project fits perfectly with Ethiopia’s national strategies regarding the need to use ICT and digital content in our system. We will also expand this system by adopting and customizing all activities according to the local context,” said Dr. Zelalem Assefa, CEO of ICT and Digital Education at the Ministry of Education of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia .

Au Ghana, the focus is on creating digital content for all subjects, as well as training teachers and students in primary and secondary schools. The project also includes the creation of an electronic repository that teachers can use to upload content and that learners can access online and offline with little or no supervision.

“We need to be able to embrace technology to improve our education service delivery. The TeOSS project is aligned with the Tech4Education area of ​​Huawei’s TECH4ALL digital inclusion initiative, which aims to promote equity and quality in education through technology, and works to improve access to digital, improve digital skills and develop high quality courses. The Huawei ICT Academy program is designed to help cultivate ICT talent by improving digital skills.
