Professor In 2014, Zoll warned against the Istanbul Convention. Now he admits: I was wrong | Policy

On Monday, the Minister of Justice, Zbigniew Ziobro, announced that he had submitted a formal request to the Minister of Family, Labor and Social Policy, Marlena Maląg, to initiate a dismissal by Poland the Istanbul Convention. In his opinion, the document is “ideological”, which is denied by experts and lawyers dealing with the issue of human rights.

Professor Andrzej Zoll on the Istanbul Convention: I was wrong

Former president of the Constitutional Tribunal, prof. Andrzej Zoll stated in 2014 in an interview with the Catholic Information Agencythat “a suspicion is born” that the convention is “an attack on our civilization”. This statement was later repeatedly cited by opponents of the convention as an argument for the termination of the document.

– After these six years, I would say that I was wrong then – he said on Wednesday TVN24 prof. Andrzej Zoll. As he added, he “drew conclusions” and believes that “today there are no grounds for pronouncing this convention, and quite the opposite.” – It would be very harmful for us – he stressed.

According to prof. Andrzej Zoll, the convention “did not bring any negative consequences for us, Poles, on the contrary”. – As for the protection of women’s rights, Polish legislation has changed to some extent. That is, this protection, especially against physical or mental violence, is stronger than it was before the signing of the convention, said the former president of the Constitutional Tribunal.

– I believe today that the drive to withdraw from this agreement on the Istanbul Convention is a breach of international solidarity in defense of women. This will be a catastrophe for Poles and the Polish state. In public opinion, we will be punished for this exceptionally – he emphasized.
