On the 14th, Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital revealed that a joint research team of Professor Hwi-young Kim and Professor Jeong-won Lee of the College of Pharmacy at Seoul National University proved that non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (fatty liver) occurs when TM4SF5 is overexpressed through animal experiments and cell experiments.

The research results were published in the September issue of the online edition of’Journal of pathology’, a famous overseas journal under the title’Differential TM4SF5-mediated SIRT1 modulation and metabolic signaling in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis progression’.

TM4SF5 is a protein known to be associated with liver fibrosis and liver cancer. When the SIRT1 protein is suppressed in the liver by TM4SF5, fat hyperaccumulation occurs in hepatocytes, and the inflammatory mediators by TM4SF5 are overexpressed, leading to increased steatohepatitis and liver fibrosis in the fatty liver. The research team also found that fatty liver patients It has been demonstrated that TM4SF5 not only causes steatosis in liver tissue, but also plays an important role in progression to steatohepatitis and fibrosis. This study identified intracellular reactions and various pathologies that cause steatohepatitis, and TM4SF5 and related inflammatory reaction mediators are expected to be promising therapeutic targets for steatohepatitis in the future.

Professor Kim Hwi-young said, “With the recent rapid development of drug treatments for viral hepatitis, the importance of fatty liver as a cause of chronic liver disease and liver cancer will become more prominent in the future.”
