“Prof. Dr. Alexander Schraml and his Impact on Würzburg: The Pioneer of Municipal Services of General Interest”

Prof. Dr. Alexander Schraml. According to a press release from the district office, Schraml has had a significant impact on the district of Würzburg over the past 25 years. The following information is taken from this.

As a member of the board of the municipal company (KU) of the district of Würzburg, Schraml led, among other things, medical care and nursing, but also local public transport and waste disposal into a new era of services of general interest. Numerous establishments and institutions were created under his aegis, accompanied by district politics, and existing ones were further developed.

For his services to the residents of the district of Würzburg, Schraml has now been awarded the Golden Medal of Merit of the district of Würzburg – an award that has been presented for the first time in the history of the district. District Administrator Thomas Eberth honored Schraml as part of a small celebration on his farewell as KU board member. After three years at the top, he handed over his office on April 1, 2023 to his successor, Eva von Vietinghoff-Scheel, who was appointed by the district council in 2019.

From the judge’s seat to the district office of Würzburg

Schraml began his service for the district of Würzburg in 1996. The newly elected District Administrator Waldemar Zorn called Schraml, who was appointed as a young judge at the Administrative Court of Würzburg, to the district office. His responsibilities initially included the management of Department II, municipal affairs, foreigners and asylum seekers for two years.

By working in a newly established working group to reform the district administration, Schraml laid the foundation for the founding of the municipal company – and thus for his work over the past 25 years. On April 1, 1998, Schraml was appointed to the board of directors of the municipal company of the district of Würzburg together with Joachim Riedmayer, from 2005 he managed its fortunes alone.

Pioneer in municipal services of general interest

When honoring Schraml, the district administrator particularly emphasized his political vision. With the founding of the KU, the two “district old people’s and nursing homes” in Würzburg and Aub, the district hospital (today Main-Klinik) in Ochsenfurt and the transport company APG were transferred to new structures. In the years that followed, the takeover of waste management – today known as Team Orange – and other areas up to parts of the water supply in the western district followed. This “Bavarian concept” has now found numerous imitators in large parts of Germany.

With the care advice launched in 2009 and the creation of an overall concept for senior citizens, the district of Würzburg has again taken on a pioneering role, District Administrator Eberth continued to praise. In addition to his many tasks and projects in the service of the KU, Schraml is still committed to the common good in many other places, including as chairman of the Federal Association of Municipal Facilities for the Elderly and Disabled or the Municipal Aid for the Elderly in Bavaria. As an honorary professor at the Technical University of Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS), he also shares his knowledge and experience with students of applied social sciences.

Schraml thanks companions and successor

Surprisingly, despite all this, Schraml still found and still finds time to campaign for positive development locally, whether in local politics or as a sponsor of the local cultural scene. “From 2002 to 2022 he was a member of the municipal council of the Kürnach community and showed far-sightedness here too when making trend-setting decisions for Kürnach,” emphasized Eberth.

Schraml was touched by the award and the reception at the district office. Schraml thanked District Administrator Thomas Eberth, former District Administrator Eberhard Nuß, the former District Administrator Waldemar Zorn and the many other companions from local politics and the District Office, but also the around 1400 employees of the KU today.
