Pro-Palestinian Demonstrations in Frankfurt: Remember and Fight Together

A week after the attack on Israel began, pro-Palestinian groups plan to demonstrate in Frankfurt on Saturday. They want to “remember and fight together”. The Hessian anti-Semitism commissioner is calling for a ban, the city is examining it.

“Here, hatred is fomented, agitated and violence is glorified,” said the anti-Semitism commissioner of the Hessian state government, Uwe Becker (CDU), on Tuesday in reference to a call for demonstrations by three pro-Palestinian groups.

On Saturday afternoon, “Migrantifa Rhein-Main”, “Palestine eV” and “Studis against right-wing agitation” have called for a rally at Frankfurt’s Hauptwache – under the motto “Freedom for Palestine”. Monday’s call was, among other things published on Instagram.

Call: “Let us fight together”

Referring to the attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip, the authors write: “It is the first time in modern history that Palestine has defended itself on the scale of the recent attacks by successfully attacking Israel’s colonial military infrastructure.”

You stand by those who fight for their freedom. “Let us remember and fight together.”

Around 900 people killed in Hamas attack

Terrorists from the radical Islamic Hamas attacked Israel last Saturday. Around 900 people were killed and more than 2,600 were injured, according to the Israeli Ministry of Health. Around 150 people were kidnapped from Israel to the Gaza Strip.

Hamas is classified as a terrorist organization by the EU, the USA and Israel.

According to the Ministry of Health there, at least 687 people were killed and more than 3,800 injured in massive Israeli counterstrikes in the Gaza Strip (to the live blog on tagesschau.de).

Becker: “Language of glorification of violence”

The Hessian anti-Semitism commissioner Becker sees the call for the rally in Frankfurt as a “language of glorification of violence”. This “destructive advertising against Israel” should not exist on German streets, he said. He called on the city of Frankfurt to ban the meeting.

The Frankfurt public order officer Annette Rinn (FDP) confirmed to the hr on Tuesday evening that a rally had been registered for Saturday – and also one for Wednesday.

On Instagram, the association “Palestine eV” called for a “spontaneous rally” on Wednesday afternoon, also at the Hauptwache. According to the public order department, the city is examining possible bans on both rallies.

Berlin bans demonstration, solidarity in Darmstadt

Meanwhile, Berlin police banned a Palestinian supporter demonstration announced for Wednesday. Carrying out the demonstrations would pose a threat to public safety and order, the police said on Tuesday evening.

The attack on Israel caused horror around the world – including in Hesse. We stand closely and in solidarity with Israel, said State Parliament President Astrid Wallman (CDU) on Sunday.

To express solidarity with Israel, more than 100 people gathered at a rally in Darmstadt on Tuesday evening. According to the police, the action on Friedensplatz in the city center was registered by a party alliance. There were no incidents.
