Prison Libraries Implemented in Cochabamba Prisons as Part of ‘Bolivia Lee’ Program

“The Knight in Rusty Armor”, “Journeys through a Dream”, “La Chaskañawi”, “Metal del Diablo”, “Race of Bronzes”, “The Apple of His Eye”, normative compendiums, codes, Algebra, Geometry and many others are on shelves.

With a total of 3,500 books, libraries were implemented yesterday in the seven prisons of Cochabamba: El Abra, San Sebastián Mujeres, San Sebastián Varones, San Pedro de Sacaba, San Antonio, San Pablo de Quillacollo and San Pedro de Arani . The act of implementing these spaces, within the framework of the ‘Bolivia Lee’ program, took place in the El Abra prison.

The director of the El Abra prison, Lieutenant Colonel Marco Antonio Perales, highlighted that reading is an important part of the social reintegration of these people deprived of liberty.

The event, held on the prison’s futsal court, featured a musical presentation by the electronic group ‘Abra Fusión’, which, between cuecas and other rhythms, enlivened the morning.

Jorge Gallardo, one of the people deprived of liberty, performed a poem, dedicated to Bolivia, which at the end says: “The future on earth depends on us.”

In addition, he reflected on the library and the literati.

“Literature is a person who has been able to understand what a literary narrative says. There are professionals who do not read (…). We have to learn to pick up a book to read and interpret what the author wanted to say. “I started writing when I was 40 years old, I don’t understand the difference between predicate and subject, but I can give you writing that can make you analyze the needs we have as people.”

The person in charge of post-literacy under the Ministry of Education, Ana Ramos, explained that community libraries consist of 500 books each. In this campaign, 3,500 units are allocated in total.

The collection process of the donated books was carried out in coordination with the Departmental Directorate of Education (DDE).

The deputy director of Alternative and Special Education, David Pedro Pacheco, recalled that this is the fruit of the Bolivia Lee campaign, which was launched in mid-March.

“The reading habit is important to strengthen in all communities.”

The departmental director of the Penitentiary Regime, Tito Arze, expressed the possibility of expanding the campaign and analyzing storage spaces so that the libraries in the facilities are supplied with a greater number of books.

During the official ceremony, the prison directors received the boxes of texts, while the musical group’s targets were heard.
