The son of Prince Albert of Monaco is very candid in an interview with the French magazine ‘Point de Vue’. In honor of his 20th birthday on August 24, Alexandre Grimaldi opens up about his relationship with his father.
The son of Prince Albert and Nicole Coste was born on August 24, 2003. At that time, his parents had a love affair that was kept out of the public eye. Nicole Coste is a former flight attendant originally from Togo, West Africa.

It was quite a surprise when Nicole Coste announced through the press in 2005 that she had a child with the prince. As proof, she also shared a private photo of Prince Albert and her son. “I am not an illegitimate son”
Alexandre is often called an ‘illegitimate son’ by the media, but he doesn’t think that’s right. “I’m not ‘illegitimate’,” he says in the interview. “When I was born, neither of my parents was involved in another marriage and they didn’t commit adultery. To use that word (out-of-wedlock ed.) is offensive.” In addition, Alexandre confirms that his father recognized him without outside pressure: “I was recognized completely voluntarily by my father when I was a baby. Not through the courts or the press who pushed him to do so.”

Alexandre Grimaldi uses his father’s surname
Contrary to what most media believe, Alexandre simply uses his father’s surname. “My father’s surname is Grimaldi. It makes sense that I also have his surname. I would have been called Dochomel from behind if my father had been Mr. Dochomel,” says Alexandre in the French magazine. “In addition, I have never used the surname Coste or Coste-Grimaldi,” admits Prince Albert’s son. “Not even on an ID card, at school or on diplomas. Those who call me that have the wrong attitude.”

Alexandre’s future in Monaco
Being born out of wedlock, Alexandre Grimaldi is not in the line of succession to the Monaco throne. Although he is the eldest son of Prince Albert, he will not succeed his father. His half-sister Jazmin Grace Grimaldi (31) cannot succeed her father either. She is Prince Albert’s first child from a relationship with broker Tamara Rotolo.

In 2006, two years after Alexandre was born, it was revealed that the prince has already had a daughter from a previous relationship. In one fell swoop, Alexandre gained a half-sister.
A modeling career just like Grandma Grace Kelly
As Grace Kelly’s grandchild, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Alexandre is very interested in the fashion world. He even considered modeling full-time, “but I lost interest because of Covid,” he says in the interview. “The idea of being photographed in beautiful clothes seemed very amusing to me as a teenager,” Prince Albert’s son admits.

But where his father as a prince is often (and likes) in the spotlight, this is less for his son. “I personally don’t see myself on a stage.” But he likes to make an exception for a great brand, he says. “Because why not?” We can draw a conclusion from the candid interview: Prince Albert’s son is very happy at the moment.
Whether he will also mean something for Monaco is not yet known. “My focus is mainly on my studies at the moment, I’m only 20 years old. Let me get my diploma first, then we’ll talk further.”
