Price Comparison: Airport Kiosk vs. Kiwi and Narvesen

(The online newspaper): Sara Bransfjell (37) stops by the kiosk at Gardermoen before she gets on the plane to Alaska.

– I bought a bottle of Bris and a chewing gum, it cost NOK 75. I think it’s quite expensive, says Bransfjell.

Feel free to advise Nettavisen’s journalist about matters!

Bransfjell travels with Jenni Valseth (34).

– They can take whatever price they want here, you have no alternative, she says.

Drinks and food with a liquid consistency such as yoghurt are not allowed through the security check. It is therefore not possible to buy this in a shop before going through the security check.

– You have to buy drinks in here if you need to, you have no choice, says Valseth.

Price check of 20 items

Nettavisen has checked the prices of typical goods you want to shop with when you’re out on a trip. The check shows that the prices are up to three times what you have to pay in a normal shop. We have also compared prices with Narvesen in central Oslo. There, too, Gardermoen comes out clearly more expensive.

Some items in particular stand out:

A bottle of Imsdal 0.65 litres

Gardermoen: 45.00 Kiwi in Oslo S: 19.90

Litago chocolate milk 0.5 litres

Gardermoen: 37.00 Kiwi in Oslo S: 15.90

Lypsyl lip balm

Gardermoen: 69.00 Kiwi in Oslo S: 27.40

Freia milk chocolate

Gardermoen: 75.00 Kiwi in Oslo S: 39.90

We found the biggest price difference on Go’ Morgen yoghurt.

Gardermoen: 31.00 Kiwi in Oslo S: 10.90

Three times as expensive

The Go’ Morgen yogurt is therefore almost three times as expensive in the kiosk at Gardermoen as at Kiwi in Oslo S.

– I know it’s more expensive at airports, but these are pretty sick prices, says Anne Haugen (25) from Tromsø.

She is going to buy a box of lozenges that costs NOK 28 at Gardermoen, while they cost NOK 16 at Kiwi on Oslo S.

– Exactly, almost double the price, says Haugen.

Smash and M and Sørlandschips: Here the price is converted to store size

Size matters

The kiosk at the airport sells a number of items in different sizes than what you are used to from the store. This can make it more difficult to discover how much more expensive the item actually is.

For example, a bag of M chocolate sells for 51.00 at the airport, while it costs 32.90 at Kiwi. But the bag at Kiwi is much larger, and the price per kilo is actually double at the airport.

The same is true with a bag of Sørland chips. It costs 47.00 at the airport, while it costs 29.90 at Kiwi. In addition, the bag at Kiwi is almost twice as big. The price per kilo is more than triple.

More expensive than in the city

Avinor says their prices should match kiosk prices in Oslo. But here too, Nettavisen’s price check indicates that a little extra is added. Random samples of ten goods show that several goods are between 10 and 20 per cent more expensive at Gardermoen than at Narvesen in Oslo S. The biggest price difference was for these goods:

Freia milk chocolate

Gardermoen: 75.00 Narvesen in Oslo S: 63.40

Bamsemums

Gardermoen: 56.00 Narvesen in Oslo S: 50.00

Imsdal (0,65 l)

Gardermoen: 45.00 Narvesen in Oslo S: 40.00

Avinor: – We will follow this up

The results of the price test mean that Avinor will now follow up the matter further. Avinor is responsible for the offer at the airport, and it is Avinor that makes agreements with those who are allowed to operate kiosks and restaurants at the airport.

Avinor states that it makes several demands on tenants to ensure that prices are not higher at the airport than a similar concept outside the airport.

– A kiosk at Oslo Airport, regardless of the brand that operates it, should be comparable to one of the large kiosk chains in Oslo, says manager of terminal in Avinor, Iskra Skarm to Nettavisen.

She adds:

– We think the comparison with Kiwi is completely on the side.

But for a bottle of Imsdal, the price at Gardermoen is significantly higher than at both Kiwi and Narvensen.

– Why should the water be so much more expensive with you?

– Our contracts are clear that the prices should initially not be different compared to the same concept outside the airport. We follow this up with all our tenants. We will also follow this up in this case, says Skram.

– Go’Morgen yoghurt, Litago and orange juice are also items you are not allowed to take through the security check – and which come out as expensive compared to both Kiwi and Narvesen. Do you set the price extra high for goods that you know people cannot bring into the airport?

– Avinor does not have the opportunity to control the tenant’s prices due to market regulations and competition. We can only follow up and make demands for competitive pricing in relation to the market and similar concepts otherwise, says Skram. These are conditions that are also regulated in the contracts Avinor has with its tenants.

– NOK 75 for a Freia milk chocolate is much more expensive than both Narvesen and Kiwi. Do you think it’s an ok price?

– The prices are set by the company itself, although we try to influence through the contracts. It is also the case that, just like everywhere else in society, prices vary from chain to chain and store to store. Chocolate, which you refer to, is, for example, much cheaper at duty-free. There it costs NOK 39 and you also get 50 grams more chocolate in the package, says Skram.

She is clear that they will follow up the results from Nettavisen’s price test.

– We will follow up the example with the comparison against Narvesen. Comparing with Kiwi is completely beside the point, a kiosk has no opportunity to compete with a low-price chain owned by the market leader Norgesgruppen.

– Busy about delivering

The “Point” kiosk in Gardermoen, which Nettavisen price tested, is run by the company SSP.

– Otherwise, we believe that it is not relevant to compare prices in a kiosk at an airport against a low-price chain in the grocery sector, the company writes in an e-mail.

Nettavisen has also asked the company to comment that their kiosk at Gardermoen comes out as significantly more expensive than the Narvesen kiosk we checked at Oslo S.

– We are very keen to deliver the best possible value to our customers. To ensure that we are as competitive as possible, we regularly measure ourselves against similar concepts in the city centre. This is also part of our contractual obligation towards Avinor, the company writes.
