The curators of Israel’s Hecht Art Museum have found that three previously unknown sketches created by the artist are hidden in one of the paintings of the prominent 20th century painter Amedeo Modigliani, writes “Guardian”.

The nude “Nude with Hat” painted by Amedeo Modigliani in 1908 is placed upside down in the exhibition, because his other work – “Maud Abrantes” – is on the other side of the same canvas in the correct position.
Italian-born artist Modigliani’s unfinished works were discovered after museum specialists took an X-ray of “Nude with Hat” to prepare the painting for display at an exhibition in Philadelphia. Inna Berkovic, an art historian at the Hecht Museum, described it as a “quite surprising discovery”.
Amedeo Modigliani is considered one of the greatest modernist artists of the 20th century. The artist led a bohemian life in France, where his acts received a very controversial assessment, and died only at the age of 35 in deep poverty.
Modigliani’s works are characterized by slender, elongated necks and faces. This style of painting, influenced by the art of African and Cycladic Greek culture, became popular in France in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
One of Modigliani’s works, Reclining Nude, was sold for more than $170 million in 2015, becoming one of the most expensive paintings of all time. Another of his works sold for $157 million in 2018.
From this discovery, it follows that the act “Nude with Hat” includes as many as five works of the artist, painted on top of each other, most likely to save money for the purchase of a new canvas. Thanks to X-ray and other modern research technologies, hidden works have also been found under the works of other famous artists, including paintings by Degas and Rembrandt. A previously unknown self-portrait of the artist was also recently discovered under an x-ray of one of Vincent van Gogh’s works.
