Preventing Type 2 Diabetes: The Worst Habit, the Best Fruit, and More Ways to Reduce Risk

It is a serious disease, but the good news is that it can be prevented!

There are factors such as family history, age and ethnicity that may put some patients at a higher natural risk of type 2 diabetes. However, healthy lifestyle and habits can help many people avoid the disease indefinitely.

Conversely, unhealthy habits can significantly increase the risk of type 2 diabetes – and there is one in particular that endocrinologists agree is probably the worst thing you can do if you want to avoid the disease.

The fruit that helps you lower your glucose level and balance your blood sugar to prevent diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is most often caused by this habit

Many people do it, but few are really aware that sweetened drinks are dangerous. If you are used to drinking juices frequently, find out that endocrinologists claim that this habit is extremely harmful.

“Juice, sweet tea and other sugary drinks will usually raise the sugar level. Avoid foods made with high-fructose corn syrup,” says endocrinologist Dr. Florence Comite, physician and founder of the Comite Center.

Dr. Moreno completes the information by saying that alcoholic beverages are almost as harmful. Studies have shown links between chronic alcohol consumption, hormonal imbalances, blood sugar fluctuations and insulin resistance, as well as type 2 diabetes. Alcohol consumption can also lead to chronic pancreatitis, which has been linked to a higher risk of developing diabetes. Drinking alcohol can also interfere with certain medications, especially those used to manage blood sugar levels.

You can also avoid diabetes if you limit the consumption of carbohydrates

Dr. Comite says that regular consumption of processed carbohydrates, such as baked goods, bread and pasta that are low or lacking in dietary fiber, can wreak havoc on blood sugar and weight management.

Choose more protein instead of carbohydrates.

“Eat a handful of nuts, a little cheese, yogurt, some turkey or a hard-boiled egg. Proteins, which are digested more slowly than carbohydrates (glucose, fructose), will slow down the absorption of sugars (carbohydrates) in the bloodstream and change the release of insulin, keeping the sugar level stable over a longer period,” says Dr. Florence Comite.

Type 2 diabetes develops when there is insulin resistance.

“The body produces insulin, but the body does not use insulin properly. Insulin helps glucose enter the cells, and when you develop diabetes you will need more insulin for glucose to enter the cells”, explains Dr. Jorge Moreno, specialist in internal medicine and obesity medicine at Yale Medicine.
