“Preventing Transmission of Hepatitis from Pregnant Women to Babies: Effective Methods”

While

Hepatitis is a liver disease in humans through a virus, this disease needs to be watched out for because it can be transmitted through the delivery process. The following are ways to prevent pregnant women who are infected with hepatitis from passing it on to their children in the womb.

Babies in the womb who contract hepatitis from their mother will be very dangerous. In addition, hepatitis is also a cause of death for women in the world, including pregnant women.

Hepatitis can be contracted before and after delivery. According to data from the Ministry of Health, there are 7.1 percent or around 18 million Indonesians who are infected with hepatitis B and are very at risk of developing liver cancer. In 2022, around 50,744 pregnant women will be infected with hepatitis B.

According to the Journal of the Faculty of Medicine concerning the Effects of Hepatitis on Pregnancy, it says that hepatitis B will not affect the fetus, but will be infected during delivery or direct contact or through breast milk.

Babies born due to hepatitis infection in the mother will have an impact on body weight, babies born with a weight below 2,500 grams will be more at risk of death, besides that they will experience mental and physical disorders in their growth and development.

How to prevent it?

The risks of hepatitis B can be prevented from early pregnancy such as:

  1. Do HIV and Syphilis tests
  2. Carry out three doses of Hepatitis B immunization for infants, and administer HB0 in less than 24 hours to reduce transmission from mother to baby.
  3. HBIg administration to infants born to HBsAg reactive mothers, and Tenofovir administration to pregnant women with high viral loss.

Just like hepatitis B, hepatitis C also needs to be watched out for in pregnant women. Hope it is useful!
