Preventing Scars from Chicken Pox: Tips from Dermato-Venereology Doctor Vladislav Gogu

Chickenpox, or chicken pox, is a very contagious disease of childhood. It is manifested by the appearance of blisters, initially on the face, chest and back, which then spread over the entire body. If simple rules are not followed, chicken pox can leave scars, that’s why it’s good to know what they are.

Vladislav GOGU, DERMATO-VENEREOLOGY DOCTOR: “Chickenpox is a disease that occurs more often in children, and is caused by a type 3 herpes virus, the varicella-zoster virus. And the first infection is manifested specifically through this disease, which we call chicken pox. After that, the virus remains in the body, and over a certain period of time, normally over decades, it can reactivate once more, presenting itself as a second episode called herpes zoster”.

Chickenpox can be transmitted either by direct contact or by coughing or sneezing. A person is contagious starting one or two days before the appearance of the eruptions, and until the transformation of all the blisters into crusts, usually 5-7 days.

Vladislav GOGU, DERMATO-VENEREOLOGY DOCTOR: “The same lesions appear, such as in herpes simplex, papulo-vesicular lesions. These umbilical vesicles, quite widespread, which bother children. They somehow try to scratch them, to excoriate them, and here there is a certain risk of deeper trauma to the skin, which could lead to scars, to some sequelae that remain for life”.

Here are some rules to improve the symptoms of chicken pox. First of all, it is necessary to ventilate the room, rest and properly hydrate the child.

Vladislav GOGU, DERMATO-VENEREOLOGY DOCTOR: “All the remedies that speed up the resolution of these lesions, that reduce the subjective signs, especially of itching, are welcome. We have several preparations that we use, let’s say aniline dyes, there are certain remedies such as poxclin, in spray, which we apply to dry the lesions, to calm the inflammation, to reduce these subjective signs”.

In addition to using these remedies, in case of fever and pain, it is recommended to take paracetamol, ibuprofen and aspirin being contraindicated. But how can we avoid the appearance of scars?

Vladislav GOGU, DERMATO-VENEREOLOGY DOCTOR: “All traumatic contacts on the skin, they can delay healing. Increased humidity, traumatization even through clothes, through towels, obviously can lead to the prolongation of these injuries”.

Here are the most important tips to avoid traumatizing the eruptions: dress your child in loose cotton clothes; it is allowed to take a shower, but without using soap or shower gel; do not use abrasive sponges or other abrasive elements during the shower; avoid using the towel, and wipe with light dabbing movements; and one of the most important rules is to cut the nails, to prevent both scratching and infection. Gloves can be used for babies.

Once the last blister has turned into a crust and comes off naturally, the child is considered cured, with no risk of contaminating other people.
