Preventing Pancreatic Cancer: Symptoms, Risk Factors, and Prevention Tips from University of Indonesia’s Dean of Medicine

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Dean of the Faculty of Medicine (FK) University of Indonesia (UI) Prof. Ari Fahrial Syam said that pancreatic cancer can occur in a person’s body without any particular symptoms.

“If you have symptoms, it’s too late. When the patient has yellow eyes, loses weight, it means it’s already pancreatic cancer, it’s too late. Therefore, now we have to educate the public that this disease starts with no symptoms,” he said in a media briefing held by the Doctors Association. Indonesia (IDI) about pancreatic cancer which was followed online in Jakarta, Friday.

Ari mentioned a number of symptoms such as yellow eyes, weight loss, itching, pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and heartburn, are a number of symptoms of pancreatic cancer that you need to watch out for.

However, he emphasized that a number of these symptoms are not specific symptoms of pancreatic cancer, because the disease has varying symptoms.

“Don’t ignore it, heartburn has always been thought of as stomach ulcers. Once again, don’t underestimate heartburn, even though it’s unlikely, your heartburn may be related to pancreatic cancer,” he said.

Apart from that, Ari also conveyed a number of risk factors that could cause pancreatic cancer, including age, cigarette and alcohol consumption, obesity, a high-fat diet, and genetic factors.

For this reason, he recommends that people who have a number of risk factors check themselves with a doctor and do it medical check-up at least once a year to prevent more serious illnesses.

This, he continued, is because pancreatic cancer has a high mortality rate if it is only discovered at an advanced stage, namely 90 percent in the first year.

“In 2020, 57,600 new cases were found in Europe, with 90 percent of deaths generally coming without symptoms,” said Prof. Ari Fahrial Syam.

However, Ari emphasized that pancreatic cancer can be prevented. For this reason, he advises people to live healthily by not smoking and consuming alcohol, exercising regularly, and not following a high-fat diet.
