“Preventing Neuropathy with B Vitamins: Importance and Daily Requirements”

At the Demystifying Neuropathy Forum on Friday (19/5/2023), Global Medical Director, P&G Health Nerve Care Franchise Dr. Inna Eiberger said, B vitamins are very important to support nerve health and nerve regeneration.

Damaged nerves most commonly cause numbness, tingling, prickling and burning sensations in the hands or feet.

However, sometimes it is difficult for sufferers to realize the symptoms that appear at the beginning, before they become unbearable.

Dr. Satish V Khadilkar, Professor and Head of the Department of Neurology at Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences in Mumbai, India said that neuropathic pain can cause some significant co-morbidities.

Thus, it can affect the quality of life, social life, and work life of these patients.

“This includes depression, sleep disturbances, anxiety which also require treatment and add to the economic burden on patients,” said Dr. Khadilkar.

However, early prevention can be done to avoid neuropathy and its complications.

“We can avoid very severe (neuropathy) symptoms by strengthening a good quality of life. It is very important to intervene early,” said Dr. Eiberger.

Specifically, the B vitamins that play a role in preventing neuropathy are vitamins B1 (thiamine), B6 ​​(pyridoxine), and B12 (cobalamin).

“Vitamins B1, B6, and B12, play an important role in nerve health and nerve regeneration that act through different modes,” he said.

How do B vitamins prevent neuropathy?

Dr. Eiberger explains the function of each of the B vitamins on nerve health as follows:

  • Vitamin B1: provides energy for the nerves
  • Vitamin B6: helps signal transmission in the nerves
  • Vitamin B12: supports nerve regeneration

“An in vitro study initiated by P&G Health showed that when vitamins B1, B6, and B12 were added to a culture of neurons with healthy nerve cells, there was a 124 percent increase in total neurite length and a 55 percent increase in total principal cell area,” said Dr Eiberger. .

Nerve tissue from cells that are nourished with vitamins B1, B6, and B12 also experienced a two-fold increase.

Further in vitro experiments have proven that vitamins B1, B6, and B12 support nerve cell recovery after nerve cell damage.

What is the daily requirement of vitamins B1, B6, and B12?

Referring to the Indonesian Ministry of Health, the daily requirement for vitamins B1, B6, and B12 is as follows:

  • Vitamin B1

    • Age 0-5 months: 0.2 mg
    • Age 6-11 months: 0.3 mg
    • Age 1-3 years: 0.5 mg
    • Age 4-6 years: 0.6 mg
    • Age 7-9 years: 0.9 mg
    • Age 10-12 years: 1.1 mg (for men) and 1 mg (for women)
    • Age 13-80 and over: 1.2 mg (for men) and 1.1 mg (for women)
  • Vitamin B6

    • Age 0-5 months: 0.1 mg
    • Age 6-11 months: 0.3 mg
    • Age 1-3 years: 0.5 mg
    • Age 4-6 years: 0.6 mg
    • Age 7-9 years: 1 mg
    • Age 10-18 years: 1.3 mg (for men) and 1.2 mg (for women)
    • Age 19-49 years: 1.3 mg
    • Age 50-80 and over: 1.7 mg (for men) and 1.5 mg (for women)
  • Vitamin B12

    • Age 0-5 months: 0.4 mcg
    • Age 6 months – 6 years: 1.5 mcg
    • Ages 7-9 years: 2 mcg
    • Age 10-12 years: 3.5 mcg
    • Ages 13-80 and over: 4 mcg
